Cyber Predators Are Watching Your Kids

A child playing a game or looking around a webpage may seem relatively innocent and because they are sitting in your home you may feel that they are completely safe however this would be a major mistake. The rapid expansion of various chat sites and peer-to-peer chat programs has given pedophiles an easy way to groom a child and gain access to enough information to be able to kidnap your child.

As a parent it is vital to take an active role and source as much information as you can to keep your kids safe from these cyber predators. You may not be able to watch your kids every minute while they are online but following some simple guidelines will make it less likely that your children will become a victim of an online predator. Here are a few tips:

1) Give Them Attention

Cyber Predators Are Watching Your Kids

Always make your children feel important and give them attention and affection. Particularly with teens they become more vulnerable to cyber predators if they are looking elsewhere for attention so make sure they feel important.

2) Computer Location

By placing the computer in a common location you will be able to glance at what you child is looking at on the screen and make it less likely that a predators messages etc will go unnoticed.

3) Monitor Chats

The best chat rooms for kids are those that are monitored by a moderator. Tell your children not to take private messages and walk by the computer once in a while to see what is going on with chats etc.

4) Common Email Accounts

By using a common email address for the whole family you can more easily monitor the content of emails and intercept any attempted contact from anyone you suspect of being a cyber predator.

5) Emphasize the Dangers

Always talk to your children and explain the dangers that exist online and that they need to be careful abut what information they give out. Also tell them to never give out pictures of themselves or personal information to anyone they don't know in person.

6) Account Information

Explain to your children not to use their real name when setting up various accounts online unless it's for trusted sites such as Yahoo or MSN. These sites have high security levels so can be trusted and in cases where a child does go missing often police can find helpful information by activity traces through these accounts.

The incidence of abductions and kidnappings by cyber predators unfortunately has grown to alarming levels in recent years making it essential for every parent to take steps to protect their children. While police are having some pleasing success at catching these predators it is better to make the effort and ensure that your child doesn't become a victim to start with rather than hope the police catch the predator after the fact. Look out for your kids every day, because the cyber predators are always watching.
