Talking Ethics With Your Children

Children watch their parents. Children often model their own behavior based on what they see their parents do.

Very recently a woman faced an ethical dilemma and didn't know what to do. Her daughter is in high school and has a friend. The friend's mom lied about their address so that her daughter could attend the school. The first woman was very torn on what to do because she did not want her own daughter to accidentally spill the beans or to be asked to lie.

These situations happen daily. Our children are faced with ethical decisions they need to make. They will base their decisions on what has been modeled to them.

Talking Ethics With Your Children

Discuss ethics with your child from the time they are young. Ask questions that cause them to think about what they might do in a given situation. Often there are no right or wrong answers, but there is a lot of room for discussion.

Ask your young child what he/she would do if they saw another child take away a toy from a child playing with that toy. Would they step in? Would they tell an adult? Would they ignore the situation completely?

Ask your school age child what he/she would do if they saw another student copying their friend's paper. This might be a test or it might be homework. Would they turn in the cheater? Would they say something to the cheater? Would they mind their own business?

Ask your high schooler what they would do if they knew someone had been drinking and that person wanted to then drive. Or what would they do if they knew a friend was sneaking out at night behind their parents' back?

These are all questions of ethics. Different families will find answers to these questions in different places.

I believe it is so important to role play like this over the years so that when faced with ethical decisions your child has a base for making these types of decisions.

Daffodils and Children - Explore How to Get Them Interested

It is fascinating to watch children because they are interested in so many things adults tend to take for granted. One of their favorite flowers is the daffodil due to the design and colors that are bold and bright. Children often hear people say what flowers mean too. The fact that will relate daffodils with positive things including love, hope, and even smiles means they will want to have these flowers around them.

With that in mind, you may want to introduce your children to these flowers in a variety of ways. Show them some daffodils and chances are they will already be in awe of them. Schedule a day for attending a daffodil festival where you can all see them in large numbers. There are lots of other great activities to take part in at those events as well.

Why not ask if they would like to get a garden in place and grow their own? This is a great project for parents and children to do together. Sometimes it can be very hard to get quality time with children without distractions. Working as a team in a garden though is a great way to do so. It can be fun too because as the children get older they will be able to do more of the work.

Daffodils and Children - Explore How to Get Them Interested

They will take pride in being able to grow daffodils on their own. The memories of doing so will be very happy ones for the entire family to reflect on. Getting children to spend time outdoors with nature is a great way for you to help them develop a love of it. They can become passionate about the outdoors and what all it has to offer.

In many ways this can help to avoid conflicts with indoor problems such as too much TV or excessive video game playing. It can also help them to find a calm retreat from the various forms of stress they will experience in life.

Should you decide to grow daffodils, allow the children to help with making arrangements from it. Perhaps they would like to present one to a friend or a teacher from school. They can also use the flowers to make a variety of different craft projects. The possibilities are endless so let their creative side be explored.

There are many ways to explore daffodils with your children. They will grow up to appreciate the beauty of them. What you will also find though is that they are able to teach you a number of things this way as well. Children see the simplicity in things that adults often overlook. They will bring your attention to them once again.

Birthday Parties For Young Children

Planning a birthday party for your child is an exciting and important occasion. It's a chance to show your child just how unique and special he/she is. It can also be a bit stressful if you're not prepared! Here are some fun ideas and suggestions to help you celebrate the big event:

1) Choose a party theme. Themes could revolve around your child's favorite sport, animal, hobby, movie or TV character. Having a theme makes planning the rest of the party easier. Themed invitations, decorations, plates, napkins and thank yous create a festive feeling that flows throughout the event.

2) Get your invitations delivered 2-3 weeks in advance. You can purchase your invitations at any local card store or retail center. For you creative types, there's an endless amount of scrap booking ideas and supplies out there to make your own personalized invitations. It doesn't have to be an elaborate "masterpiece". Let your kids help cut, color and glue items onto cardstock paper. Even older children will enjoy this project! To save time and money, look for a website online where you can create and print free custom invitations.

Birthday Parties For Young Children

3) There are many fun games that can be adapted for children of all ages and party themes. Some of the time-tested traditional games are Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Musical Chairs, Red Light Green Light and Simon Says. If you're not sure how to play these, you can always search for instructions for these online. It's generally best to pass out a prize to all the participants, regardless who won the game. Keep it simple and inexpensive by passing out a sticker or small piece of candy.

4) Oh, the joy of presents! Of course it's exciting for the birthday child to open presents, but it's also fun for the other children to watch their gift being opened. To help prevent the "open mine first!" dilemma, make a game out of it by playing Musical Presents. All of the kids sit in a circle and pass around each gift from person to person while music is playing. When a grownup turns the music off, whichever present the birthday child is holding, that's the one that gets opened first! Continue playing music/passing until all the presents are opened.

5) Keep food preparation to a minimum the day of the party. Order or bake the cake ahead of time. Chop fruit and veggies the day before. You don't want to be stuck in the kitchen and miss out on all the fun.

6) Your party is sure to be remembered when you send each guest home with a cookie party favors. Some other fun items to put in a treat bag could be a whistle, stickers, lip balm, crayons, small rubber ball, yo-yo, pencil, mini note pad and candy. To save time and postage later, tuck a thank you note inside the take-home goody bag, too!

Helpful Hints: Remember to get film for your camera, charge the video camera battery and pick up some candles along with matches or a lighter!

Why Parents Need to Watch For Signs of Glue Ear in Children

The middle ear is full of air through which sound waves are conducted to the ear drum. When your child gets a cold or other respiratory virus, it can cause the middle ear to become full of fluid or mucus. The fluid can remain there for up to a month but it usually drains away on its own without medical treatment. But it is good practice to have your doctor make sure that it is all clear and the best timing for that is 3 or 4 weeks after the infection. But if it stays for than a couple of months, the risk is that your child will have to be medically treated in order to prevent hearing loss.

Typical Symptoms in Children That Indicate Glue Ear

Loss of hearing is the most common symptom that may indicate your child could be suffering from glue ear.

Why Parents Need to Watch For Signs of Glue Ear in Children

Glue ear usually only affects one ear (unilateral) but it can affect both ears (bilateral).

If your child is affected with glue ear, the amount of hearing loss can range between mild and severe.

Depending on the level of seriousness, the doctor might choose to simply do nothing but wait as the condition usually will correct itself without the need for treatment at all. In extreme cases when medication fails to correct the condition, surgery may be necessary.

So as a concerned parent, what should you be looking for as clues pointing to glue ear?

The fundamental sign is when your child seems to be finding it hard to hear sounds clearly.

If your child is having problems with study, is not able to understand class lessons and displaying a drop off in their social skills and participation in general conversation, it would be a good idea to look out for these other indicators:

Do you notice that they don't seem to understand what others are saying when they have a soft voice or are at a bit of a distance?

Combined with that, you may also notice that your child is uncharacteristically showing signs of irritability or becoming tired a lot sooner than you would expect under normal circumstances.

When they have to strain in order to hear things that are usually easy to recognize, this tends to sap your child's energy. Loss of hearing has many effects.

When you are together in a shopping center or busy street, anywhere there is a lot of background noise, take notice of their ability to hear and understand what people are saying to them.

This struggling-to-hear will often lead them to give up on conversations simply because they cannot understand what is being said.

To you as a parent, it may appear that they are simply disinterested, distracted and preferring not to engage in normal conversations.

Glue ear will make it quite difficult for your child to properly grasp what people are saying if they are a short distance away. They may only be capable of understanding direct, face-to-face conversations.

It's easy for a parent to despair that their child is being difficult, but these effects will quickly turn around once the glue ear is healed and full hearing is returned.

There are other symptoms of glue ear that can occur less often, but you should also note these signs:

Is your young child showing signs of being slow to develop their speech and language skills?

Be aware of ear pain that seems to re occur from time to time -- irritability and problems with sleeping that can't be explained as the result of other obvious causes. The interference that glue ear causes to the middle ear can also show if your child is having problems with their balance or if they seem to be clumsier than normal.

As a parent, you will want to do whatever you can to help prevent your child from contracting ear infections. That's because they can go on to cause glue ear and potential hearing loss.

Do what you can to reduce your child's exposure to other children with colds and maintain a smoke-free environment; these are two areas that increase the risk of ear infection.

So when should you seek medical advice?

Hearing is always an important area of health that needs careful attention. So, naturally, if you're concerned that your child may be having problems with their hearing, you should contact your GP and get some expert medical advice to avoid the risk of damage.

Glue ear is the most common cause of hearing loss in children but it is not the only cause.

Be careful not to self-diagnose; the doctor may need to carry out other tests to make sure that other conditions are not causing the hearing loss or pain.

The Harms of Watching Too Much TV For Children

Children cannot resist the TV screen; it is like a charm for them. Nowadays, there are a lot of studies that warn the parents of letting their children stay for long hours in front the TV, because of the health and behavioral problems that might result.

Can you prevent your children from watching TV? Of course not, but at the same time we must not let them spend all their free time in front of the screen.

What happens to him in front of the screen?

The Harms of Watching Too Much TV For Children

Overweight

Many studies on the influence of watching TV for long hours on children confirm that the children who watch TV for more than two hours a day are more likely to be overweight than others.

Irregular sleep

When children remain in front of the TV late at night that means they resist going to bed, which lead to lack of much needed sleep.

Behavioral problems

Children who watch television for long hours every day are more prone to stress, and the signs of depression and anxiety show on them more than others.

Poor school performance

Many studies have shown that the children who have televisions in their bedrooms have a worst performance in school in comparison to their peers who do not have such devices in their bedrooms.

Less time to play

The creative and physical play has an important role in the growth of the child physical and mental state and watching television for long hours does not leave them enough time to practice playing which affect their development negatively.

Violence and fear

When the children watch things that contain some doses of violence it makes them more likely to show aggressive behavior. Watching television sometimes can lead to feelings of fear in children because some of the materials provided by the screen portrayed the world as a scary thing.

How can you limit his TV time?

No televisions in the bedrooms

Children who have a television and computer in the bedroom are watching more television than those children who do not have these devices in their bedrooms.

Do not let your child takes food in front of TV

Eating in front of the TV screen is a bad habit, and it gives him extra time to sit in front of the screen. It also makes the child in a state of excitement and tends to encourage chewing the food recklessly, which leads to the increase in weight.

Strict rules for the child free time

To prevent the child from sitting for long hours in front of the TV screen there should be a set of strict rules during the child free time. Of course you cannot prevent the child from sitting in front of the TV or playing video games, but at least those rules will prevent the child from spending all his spare time in front of the screen.

Alternative activities

It is not enough to prevent the child from spending all his spare time in front of the TV, but we should at the same time think of alternative activities for him to spend his spare time.

You can suggest a range of activities and hobbies, like reading a book or practicing a particular sport.

Be a good example

Children imitate adults, and reducing TV watching hours is not good for children only, but for adults as well. If we are really honest in our try to help our children not to sit too long in front of the TV, we should be their role models.

Many families leave the TV open all the times even if no one is sitting in front of the screen, try to set specific hours to watch TV and close the TV immediately when no one is watching it. You should not watch the materials specified for adults in front of children.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that the kids over the age of two years should not sit in front of a TV or computer screen and video games for more than an hour or two hours a day, and these hours should be in front of programs with a good quality.

How Do Reality Television Shows Affect Children?

There has been a lot of discussion lately on the relative merits of reality television when it comes to different people in society. There are a number of people that will argue that reality television is not good for children and there are many reasons that are forwarded to prove that point. Most of these reasons do not seem to be well thought out or logical however and to prove that point it is definitely possible to play Devil's advocate and argue the reverse point. Namely, the point that reality television shows can affect children in a positive sense is one that is definitely worth considering and it is worth considering for the reasons that are given below.

Education

Reality television shows can often be an education, both for the people that participate in them and for the people that watch them. Of course, in most cases reality television shows are not really open to children and this means that children are left to watch the shows on television. These shows will show how people can react when put in high stress situations and the shows themselves can also show exactly how people can react when they end up scheming and plotting against other people in order to get to the top and be the last person standing.

How Do Reality Television Shows Affect Children?

People may scoff and put on a shocked demeanor when they come across these types of events in a reality television show, but only the most naïve person would really think that none of these things spill out into real life. Reality television is given the name reality specifically because of the fact that a lot of these things go on in real life too in areas like schools, workplaces and offices. Watching the shows now will expose children to this type of behavior in a relatively controlled environment that will not directly affect them and therefore will give them a better chance of noticing and preventing such behavior when it starts getting directed against them later on in life.

Alternatives

What is available on television nowadays for children to watch? For children that are of a very young age there are of course cartoons and for children that are older there are the normal adult sitcoms and other shows that they can watch. But for children in the middle there really isn't that much else on television for them to watch. Movies have become very violent and laden with sex and the same can really be said for many of the television shows that you can see today as well. Cartoons do not have the intellectual content necessary to hold the attention of most middle-age kids and therefore one could argue that there is a big void in their lives on this particular issue.

Then consider reality television. Since there are humans interacting with other humans in a real way of speaking, there is going to be a minimum amount of violence in most cases and in shows where there has been real violence a lot of it has been edited out. The same can be true of sex and if the show is on a cable network this is definitely going to be true in terms of the editing. So reality television is a relatively clean show when compared to many of the other things your kids could be watching and since kids want to watch television, reality television in many cases is going to be your best choice to give them something positive and educational to watch. These are both very powerful reasons to consider reality television as having a positive effect on your child.

The Karate Kid 2010 Movie - How to Watch it With Your Children

There has been a fair bit of controversy surrounding the Karate Kid Movie 2010. Despite the debate as to whether this film is suitable for children to view, many youngsters will see it. As a kids karate sensei, I would like to make suggestions on how to view this movie, and how to discuss it with your child.

First off, violence sells in Hollywood. MMA is so popular because people want to see real fighting action, maybe even someone getting hurt. Sometimes more violence than necessary is shown to make a movie dramatic and sell tickets. The consequences of such violence are not shown either. Missing teeth, broken bones and other serious injuries are not portrayed accurately by Hollywood because it is too gory. The pain and trauma is also not shown because it is too confronting to viewers.

Realize that fighting is not the way to solve our problems. There are many better ways of resolving conflict other than violence, and the first is communication-talking it over. Could the differences between the characters in this movie have been resolved in a better way?

The Karate Kid 2010 Movie - How to Watch it With Your Children

The bullies in this movie, like the original Karate Kid Movie, trained in dojos that taught glorification of violence. This is extremely rare in the martial arts world, but it makes the movie more dramatic, because there has to be a bad guy in this story to make it interesting. The vast majority of martial arts instructors teach respect and avoidance of violence.

The tournament in this movie, just like the first, is not even close to what an actual martial arts tournament is like. Realise there are rules in tournaments and they are designed to prevent injury. There is also mandatory protective equipment worn in tournaments. If tournaments were run like this no one would ever attend them.

Look for good in this movie. Try to find lessons to be learned about life in the story. Try to put yourself in the different actors' positions in this movie and see where they are coming from. Is there peer pressure amongst the bullies? Was the bully brainwashed by his instructor? Was he racist? Who taught him to be racist?

Try to see how another culture lives from day to day. Remember, different is not always better or worse-it is just different, and that differences in language, food, and customs is what makes life interesting. How interesting would the world be if we were all the same? Look for common threads as well, as there are many western influences in China today. Is the western way of life always the best? Look for the beauty in the scenic sense, and also in the people and how they live. Remember, the martial arts originated in this part of the world.

What lessons did you learn from this movie?

Some Benefits Children Get From Watching TV

Watching television has always been considered as something harmful for children. In fact, studies have shown that when children stay in front of the television for several hours, they are most likely to decrease their attention span especially when it pertains to their studies. However, when watching TV is controlled and is in moderation, there are actually some benefits that children can get.

Children who start watching TV at an early age are more prone to develop the dangers attached to attention deficit disorder than those who start watching at a later stage. It is highly recommended that children under two years of age should not be exposed to television. If the child is limited up to age three, then it would be better.

When children reach four years old, they can be allowed to watch television but with the supervision of parents. It is best to have them watch shows that are directed for children's learning than any random show that is on TV. Recommended shows like Dora the Explorer, Barney, and Blues Clues highly help children's development.

Some Benefits Children Get From Watching TV

Children who watch these shows have wider vocabulary compared to children who don't. Their language development is much faster and they are known to have a higher ability in expressing themselves.

Primarily, language development improves when kids watch TV moderately and when the TV shows being viewed are educational ones. Aside from language development, children at a young age are also able to learn the alphabet, numbers, shapes, and colors when these subject matters are taught by the shows that they view. At times, learning the basics on the alphabet and other subject matters are much easier when animatedly taught by educational programs than teaching them to children in rote. This is due to the way that these topics are tackled and attractively presented to children.

Although the dangers that children are exposed to when watching TV are always present such as having a decrease in their attention span and the possibility of inculcating negative behaviors seen on TV, it still can be attributed to the control that parents exercise over their children when it comes to TV viewing.

The most important thing to remember whenever kids are watching television is ascertaining that they only watch educational TV programs but not for a long time. Along with this, it is a must that children below two years of age should not be exposed to television shows. When these things are taken into consideration strictly, TV watching can be a learning experience for children, and they are sure to benefit from it.

Encouraging Leadership in Children

Children are fascinating to watch in the way they interact with each other whether in the playground or at home. The dynamics may vary, but some will follow what the group do, others will spend their time causing problems between children, but some will stand out by helping their comrades. These other children that will be tomorrow's leaders, help by setting the right example, or simply explaining situations to their friends less able to deal with them. These are true leadership qualities.

The Drive for Leadership

For many the drive for leadership is intuitive, something they are simply born with. They know how to inspire trust from those around them. Others may try to learn the characteristics of leadership by issuing orders and striving to be the best at what they do. But this does not necessarily imply effective leadership.

Encouraging Leadership in Children

Leadership requires an understanding of the greater goals or purpose, as well as trust and example setting. As children, then natural leaders will be those who assume initiative when ever the opportunity arises. They will involve themselves in organising local events for example, come up with ideas for fundraising, and are generally and helpfully creative.

Natural born leaders know how to make the best of what is around them, recognising the skills of their peers and applying them in an effective and productive way. Such leaders will not necessarily have the best skill set of those around them, but will enable others to realise their potential and contribute more meaningfully to the whole.

Leadership - Applying the Role

Simply pushing someone towards the role of leader does not mean that they will be a good or effective leader. The title itself means little unless they have earned it and the respect of those around them. To use the analogy of the Boy Scout movement, then the attainment of the merit badge does not mark that boy out as a future leader by itself. But one destined for leadership may have managed to put together his own project, involved local shopkeepers and others in funding it. It is this initiative, good planning, and sense of purpose that marks out a true leader at any age or status. That same boy is unlikely to need any further active encouragement given such an outlook on life; leadership will be a natural response to the world around him.

Are Some Couples Having Too Many Children?

Have you ever looked at a family in public and thought that they have too many children? While some folks without any children may feel that one child is too many for them to handle, other couples have a desire to keep having children recently. Is it just a trend the public enjoys watching play out on television?

If you have not noticed lately you can tune in and watch the lives of several large families unveil their vigorous daily routines for all to see. There are shows with multiples on them featuring the difficulty life can bring when you have four, five or even eight children that are all the same age. There are other shows that feature the lives of families with five, ten, twelve and even twenty, yes twenty children! Is this a social circumstance that many were simply unaware of, or is this a rare occasion that just makes for good television? Well, as much as people are talking about the economy in the past few years it certainly hasn't stopped the production of children in the United States. That can be a very interesting fact when you look at it from an expert's point of view, which is that many feel more people are having children from the additional time the married couples have gained from the recession. To explain this in further detail, social experts are claiming that many couples are having more children due to one spouse being laid off of work or from the couple not being able to afford going out as much. This would result in the couples staying home more often than usual, and thus they are making more babies! Is that not somewhat ironic or financially strange that people that would be struggling during the recession would actually have more children that would in turn cause them several thousands of dollars to raise each child? It is this type of strategic thinking that causes many people to voice their opinions and claim some families simply have too many children.

Can it be possible for a handful of very large families to be overpopulating the world? Perhaps if that is the way you prefer to think of it, but with the amount of crimes and deaths resulted from those crimes and drug overdoses on the rise, it most likely would balance out the numeric statistics of those in big families. There seem to be two common factors that angers people judging larger families and those are that the family is not financially stable enough to support all of their children, and those that are not able to provide enough attention and care for each child that they deserve. In this day and age, you can be a family of three and need to be on some form of public assistance, certainly a large family with more than five children most likely is receiving it as well. This is what causes the main debate, that the rest of the world is paying from these couples to continuing to have children they themselves cannot afford. Can you really provide enough attention for each child when you have so many? Probably not, but several large families are doing it and the children seem to have a stronger bond with their siblings than those households with smaller amounts of children. Are big families here to stay or will they begin to taper off? Observe over the next few years and you might find it rather interesting to notice if your town is populated with large families as well.

How Children Songs Magically Grow Smiles

Music is one of the biggest highlights of a young child's day. You can also observe that children may respond to music in a different way once they reach adulthood. Young children have a knack for allowing themselves to totally be immersed in children songs. This experience is like nothing that young children have ever had before. We learn to be conscious of what others think as we grow, but a child doesn't care. They give it everything they have, and have a good time when they hear songs for children.

You will see what I mean if you go to a Wiggles concert. Simply watch the children as the Wiggles begin to sing their children songs. You may understand why the Wiggles love what they do so much when you see how the children react to their songs. Seeing that much joy and that much abandon in a child is truly a magical sight. Children can truly be themselves when they hear the children songs that the Wiggles produce.

Do you know that you don't have to go to a concert or a show to find children songs for your child to enjoy? You can purchase CDs, DVDs, and television shows that they can watch. Find something that is full of songs for children, so that they will not be planted on the floor passively watching the show. Try to find something that is full of music and will encourage interaction. My young daughter is up on her feet and moving the whole time when she watches the Wiggles.

How Children Songs Magically Grow Smiles

You can get children songs personalized for your child if you are looking for a special gift for him or her. These CDs are available on the Internet and in the mall. You can have your child's name inserted into the CD to give your child a special thrill when he or she listens to the children songs. Remember that children are egocentric when they are still under the age of five. Anyway, they think everything is about them at that age, so they may not go nuts when they hear their name.

Don't be afraid to play along with some of your kid's favorite children songs if you have a talent for singing or playing the guitar. Your children will love the interaction and the special time with you. They will also be impressed that you like what they are interested in. You should go ahead and write some songs of your own if you are really talented. If you can learn to think like a child, then there's a good chance that you will achieve something.

Warning For Children Who Watch Too Much Television

As technology becomes more prevalent in the household, there are increasingly more cases of children developing bad habits in terms of posture and strain. Without parents guiding them and teaching them good habits, these can develop over time into a painful experience for the child when they grow older. Follow our advice to help your children get the best from their early experience with technology.

Kids love watching television. As much as parents like to spend time with them, many times it is easier for the parent to just leave the child in front of the tv and give them a good hour or so watching their favorite cartoons or shows. It is important to teach them to take their focus away from the television every few minutes and look into the distance to relax their eye muscles. Not only does this help prevent shortsightedness but it will also improve their concentration over a long term. Television has never been prove to cause bad vision in children, however the strain of the eye muscles has been shown to indirectly cause vision problems in children. Like any other exercise, relaxing a muscle can have great benefits especially when it comes to the eye.

Buy your children a proper chair which is both comfortable to sit in for long periods, and does not restrict their movement in any way. A bean bag, while comfortable, may not be the best solution for them as their spine is not naturally straight and creates a bad posture for their development. A proper chair with good back support is a must, that keeps their eyes level with the television, so they are not looking up, or down at the screen. This is also true not just for television, but also when they are in front of their computer screen.

Warning For Children Who Watch Too Much Television

If they are typing, then their arms must be comfortable and not stretched out to reach the keyboard. Remember that you should try to get smaller keyboards to accompany their smaller hands, and that the table should not be too high so their feet are off the ground. If the child is able to sit down properly then their feet should properly touch the ground in comfort. Teaching them to sit straight can be a difficult and constant thing to do as a parent, but in the long run it will provide great benefits to their back muscles when they develop.
