Why Buy Multiple Watch Bands?

I was shopping in a department store one day, and I noticed a lovely selection of watches. I browsed around and came across something very interesting. There was a watch that came in a wide box, and had about 5 different bands to choose from. I then began to think about the reasons why someone would need so many bands for their watch.

Perhaps it is to match outfits. Some people have a more colorful wardrobe than others, and they might have such a variety of outfits, that they need different watch bands. Many individuals like to have varying shades of the same color in their outfits. For example, a lady might wear a pink shirt with pink pants and pink shoes. Why not have a pink watch band, as well?

Other unique individuals might want to mix and match colors. Some people might want to wear a more neutral color, like black or brown, and then have a pop of color on their watch. That idea might be a reason for multiple watch bands. It is quite the fashion trend: adding colorful accessories. An otherwise bland outfit can really liven up with the addition of a different colored watch.

Another reason might be to match shoes. Color coordination with shoes is an absolute must for many people, especially women. The shoes might match her purse, and her watch. Watch Out For Kids This Summer

With the school soon to be letting out for summer, the kids will be out playing on the community grounds more often. As this happens we need to make sure that we are aware of kids, pets, and others who are out enjoying the sunshine.

There are a couple of key things to keep in mind about kids and your community.

Parking Lot- Whether they are on bikes, skateboards, or their feet, kids can seem to jump out of nowhere and dart out from behind parked cars without thinking about the oncoming cars traveling through the parking lot. Be sure to slow down when driving through your apartment parking lot and be well aware. Watch for children playing to avoid a terrible accident.

Close Doors- You should also make sure that the gate to the community pool or door to the fitness center are locked when you leave. Kids can injure themselves if they were to get into the gym and play around with the weights unsafely.

Pool Safety- Never leave any children unattended at the pool. It says so in the pool rules and is a rule to be taken very seriously. There is no limit to the different kinds of accidents that may happen if a child is unsupervised at the pool. Don't take chances and keep an eye on them.

Be a Good Neighbor- If you see a child playing in an area of the community they shouldn't be, speak up. If you are sunbathing poolside and see some kids playing at the pool unsupervised, keep a friendly eye on them. Who knows, you may get the opportunity to be a hero and save a life.

Latchkey Lock- If your kids or young teens are home alone while you are at work, be sure to tell them to always keep the door locked and never to open it for strangers. You'd think this is obvious, but kids are forgetful and fly by the seat of their pants. They may be caught up in the latest video game and forget that they aren't supposed to open the door when a burgler scoping your apartment out, posed as a magazine salesman knocks. Just make sure they are reminded of the rules and check on them consistently while you are out.

Time- During the summer, kids have a ton of time on their hands. Make sure that they have fun healthy activities to keep them busy and keep them out of trouble. Day camp is always fun for kids and a great way to keep them occupied on those long summer days.

Kids will be kids, but at least we can help make them a little safer.

Easy Science Projects For Kids

You want your kids to have fun, but also want to expand their minds. What's a parent to do? How about a few easy science projects that are simple to recreate? Grow Crystals

Crystals can be quite fascinating. We are constantly surrounded by them from simple table salt and sugar, to the graphite in your pencil. Of course there are also more famous crystals like precious stones and diamond. You can grow some fascinating salt crystals yourself. All you need are water, salt and some time.

Easy Science Projects For Kids

Start by making a salt solution. Fill a cup with warm water and continue to add salt to it until the water can absorb no additional salt. You know you have reached this stage when the salt just drops to the bottom of the cup.

Pour a little of the salt water on a saucer and leave it sitting in a warm spot. As the water evaporates, the salt crystals will start to form. Continue to pour a little more of the saltwater on the saucer and the existing crystals and watch them grow.

Water Tension

Have you ever watched small insects walk on water? This is possible because of water tension. Here are two simple experiments that will demonstrate water tension. All you need is a glass, water, a paperclip and several pennies.

Fill the glass with water. Now drop a paper clip in the glass. Watch it drop to the bottom. Fish the paperclip out and this time gently lay it flat on the water. If you do it right, the paperclip will float on top of the water.

For our second experiment, we need to fill the glass all the way to the top with water. Grap some pennies and carefully add them to the glass, one at a time. Watch as the water rises in a dome shape over the glass without spilling.

If you'd like to take this experiment one step further, use a drop of dish soap to show how soap will disrupt the water tension. Add one drop of the soap to the glass of water. The water tension will be "broken", and the water will spill over the edges of the glass.

Static Electricity

Static electricity is another fun phenomenon. It's what makes clothes stick together in the dryer and makes your child's hair stand up when you hold a statically charged item (like a blanked from the dryer) over your child's head. Here's a simple static electricity experiment that's lots of fun. You can truly amaze young kids with this "magic".

All you need are a balloon and either a piece of felt, or a wool sweater. Blow up the balloon, then rubb it against the felt or sweater for a few seconds. Take the balloon and stick it on the wall. It should be held up there by the static electricity.

Build Your Own Volcano

This is the most "involved of all the science projects in this article. But who could resist making their own working Volcano. Since things can get a bit messy, this experiment is best done outside.

Start by making a batch of salt dough by mixing 6 cups of flour, 2 cups of salt, 2 cups of water and 4 tablespoons of cooking oil in a large bowl. Add more water as needed. You should end up with a smooth but firm dough.

Next, place and empty soda bottle on an old baking sheet and mold the dough around bottle. Cover it all the way to the top, but be careful and don't drop any dough in the bottle.

Fill the soda bottle with warm water almost to the top. It helps to use a funnel to get the water in the bottle, but not on the salt dough volcano. For bright red lava, add some red food coloring to the water before adding it to the bottle.

Pour 6 drops of liquid detergent into the bottle, then add 2 tbs of baking soda and step away from the volcano. Watch the "red lava" pour out of the volcano during this fantastics eruption.

Grow Something

You don't need a garden to grow something with your kids. There are quite a few things you can do on the kitchen counter or in a small pot. For a very fast growing experiment plant some beans in a cup of soil. Keep them in a warm spot and water them daily. Within a few days you should see a little bean sprout poking it's head out of the soil.

You can also grow alfalfa sprouts in nothing more than a dish with wet paper towels. You may even convince your child to eat her salad when you top it with some of the sprouts she has grown. For more involved growing experiments, plant some herbs in a couple of small clay pots in the kitchen window, or plant strawberry plants in wooden barrel on the porch.

How to Build a Kids Playhouse Foundation From Scratch

When building a kids playhouse, a solid foundation is critical to the safety, sturdiness and appeal of your playhouse.  To ensure that the foundation is property prepared, the following step-by-step method is provided so that the resulting playhouse will give your child years of playing enjoyment.

Select a level well drained area for the location of the playhouse.  Stake out the perimeter (footprint) of the playhouse using mason's line or some other string and cut in the grass or dirt using a garden spade.  Remove all grass and vegetation from the area that will be covered by the playhouse foundation.  Construct a form for the concrete foundation using either 1 x 4 or 2 x 4 pieces of lumber.  The form will be held in place using stakes every two to three feet will define the perimeter as well as the thickness of the concrete slab.  The form needs to be level at the top edges so the boards you use for this should not be warped or twisted.   In addition to the wood form you will need steel reinforced mesh, crushed stone aggregate or sharp-sided gravel, sand and cement.  Additionally, you will need to rent or borrow a vibrating plate soil compactor.

Once you have dug out the area for the foundation fill the area with about 3 inch deep layer of grade 5 crushed stone and pack it down using the compactor.  Cover the layer of crushed, compacted aggregate with 3-4 inches of sand and tamp it down with the compactor.  The layer of sand is critical for the curing of the concrete to maximize the strength of the slab.  The sand layer will also help prevent the cracking of the concrete while the concrete expands or contracts during changing cold or hot weather conditions.

How to Build a Kids Playhouse Foundation From Scratch

Place the wooden form on the prepared area and using wooden stakes on the outside of the form, secure the form in place so that it will not shift or move when adding the cement.  Again, the form must be level so take the time to make adjustments to assure that the form is level at this point.

Lay the steel reinforced mesh over the form and cut the mesh to fit inside the form.  At the time of pouring the cement, you will pull the mesh upwards to the middle of the cement.  Smooth the excess concrete off the top of the form so it is even and level.  Allow the concrete to cure and remove the form and securing stakes.

You now have a solid foundation that is level, sturdy and safe for building that dream kids playhouse for your child.

Colorado MMA Fighters To Watch For In 2011 - Andrew Alirez

Mixed Martial Arts is no different than any other sport or aspect of life.

There are people you interact with that are personable and professional and there are those that simply aren't.

Surging Colorado MMA fighter Andrew Alirez (1-1 as a professional, 7-0 as an amateur) out of Top Notch MMA is good example of the former. And a fighter to watch for in 2011 on the Colorado MMA fight scene. This in addition to being a dedicated husband, father, and full-time student while pursuing the bright lights of Mixed Martial Arts at the sport's highest levels.

Colorado MMA Fighters To Watch For In 2011 - Andrew Alirez

Andrew is a former Colorado state wrestling champion for Greeley Central in 1995, a multiple time winner of the freestyle and Greco-Roman Colorado state championships, and a winner of the prestigious Tuff-N-Uff MMA tournament in Las Vegas in 2010. The Tuff-N-Uff win definitely got the attention of the powers that be in the world of Mixed Martial Arts and has given his rise a good amount of momentum.

I first met Andrew in July of 2010 as I covered some of the fighters that were fighting on the Rocky Mountain Bad Boyz - MMA Madness 2 card at the Island Grove events center. His brother Mike Alirez is one of his primary trainers and was more than accommodating in granting me access to the gym.

Coming into the fight Andrew was 0-1 as a professional after losing a controversial decision at Ring Of Fire 33. A decision that had some wanting an investigation/dispute with the state commission. After going 7-0 as an amateur, he was facing some adversity for one of the few times since starting his journey towards the pinnacles of MMA. In the subsequent fight, Andrew stayed with the game plan and beat a dangerous Frank Morris in front of his home town fans, even breaking his hand on Frank's head via superman punch in the process.

Having just turned 34 at the time of this writing, Andrew knows he is peaking physically and needs to make the best of his next 2-3 years in the cage. Something he made clear in speaking with him. Andrew is one of those competitive spirits that remind us of the work ethic shown from the likes of GSP, Tim Tebow, Kobe Bryant, and Jerry Rice to name a few.

Love them or hate them, they all live by a mantra of simply putting in more work than your competition. Day after day. Week after week. Year after year. It recently became official that Andrew will be fighting Nick Buschman in Greeley on March 11th. Buschman is a tough standup fighter with much professional cage experience. This fight will signify the start of a big fight year ahead for Andrew.

3. Take a pencil or a pen. Poke a hole in the middle of the paper towel strip. Insert the pencil or pen through this hole so the strip hangs in the middle.

4. Rest the pencil or pen on the top edges of the glass container. The paper towel strip should be hanging into the glass container.

5. Take the pencil/pen off. Pour enough water into the glass container so when the strip is put back in, the water submerges the very bottom of the strip.

6. Put the strip back. Watch the water travel up the paper towel strip. Wait.

7. Repeat these steps for all the markers. See what colors each marker color is made out of!

Child's Play - Simple and Fun Activities for Kids

With four children under the age of six, I am always looking for opportunities to entertain the kids. Sure there are plenty of toys like Lego, trains and dolls, which are all great fun and of course have a place. But what I find lasts the longest and promotes cooperative play are those basic play opportunities, such as rolling down hills, finding snails or playing with boxes. Many of these activities are easy to organise or already naturally out there, just waiting to be experienced.

Following are a few of my children's favourites -

Ponding; After considering buying the net, I ended up making three ponding nets out of left over tulle and wire coat hangers. Ponding can be done anywhere where there is a catchment of water. What you find can vary depending on the water source. A healthy dam was our favourite so far, with lots of yabbies, stick insects and tadpoles. Venture to your local creek, lake or pond and be amazed at what you will find. We even saw a water rat on our latest visit to a local creek!

Child's Play - Simple and Fun Activities for Kids

Rolling down hills; This requires no preparation and is so much fun. The bigger the hill the better! Younger, less adventurous children can just start a little lower down. Wear comfortable clothes, vary your hills and have a ball. Children love it when adults join in, so mum and dad get involved. Note: Do a quick dog poop check first!

Watching clouds; A great way of relaxing with the kids. Find a comfortable spot, like the grass, a trampoline, the beach-lay back and simply watch the clouds. Spot tigers, whales, trains and other shapes. Just use your imagination!

Finding snails; Encourage children to be 'snail snoopers'. Where would snails hide? On fences, under rocks, just take a look. We always play this game on the way back from school. Respect snails and pop them safely back into their environment.

Insect spotting; This one is great to do your own backyard or further afield. Look for different types of insects. Talk about where they could be, what may be safe and what's not. Look under rocks, in bushes, and on fences. When you start looking be amazed at what you can find. You could also draw/ paint pictures of the insects. We also like to find out about them with a book or using the computer.

Stone play; A bit like sand, stones are great for play. They make a great sound when they hit tin or wood. Provide the children with a few items to use with the stones, a bit of plastic, some metal or wood. I normally use spoons, trucks, containers, cooking trays etc. The children immersed themselves in the play and so far, I never had children throwing them at each other! Give it a try.

Water Play; An old favourite. Use tank water if possible. Fill a large bucket or container. Don't make it too small, otherwise it could be tipped straight over! Provide the kids with a few different sized/shaped containers and watch them have hours of fun. Mine usually head to the sand pit to gather a few other supplies and some sort of cooking normally eventuates. Note: Adult supervision is always necessary when children play with water.

Gardening; Pots or a small vegetable plot is all that is required. Let children decide what they would like to plant and this can even encourage them to eat their vegetables. Involve them in the entire process, from planting to watering and harvesting. Make a cheap watering can out of a bottle (pancake containers are ideal) with holes through the top - they are the perfect size and each child can have one. It is so rewarding to watch plants grow, especially if they are edible. Currently, my daughter is patiently waiting for her snow peas to grow!

Boxes; Let their imagination run wild. A box can be a bus, a boat or train. Make one big enough to sit in, or small enough to push. Make a cubby house or even a city. These can be creatively decorated with paint, markers or pasting.

With all of these activities, make sure children are suitably dressed- normally comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.

Autumn is a beautiful time of year when we transition from the warm summer season to the chilly and often snowy winter season. Plus they often have a fun atmosphere with scarecrows and other fall things to get kids excited for Halloween. Have them pick out a pumpkin that you can carve or paint together.

Collecting and even raking leaves can be a lot of fun for kids too. If you need to rake the leaves anyway have the kids come out and help you, but make it a fun event. Jumping and playing in piles of leaves has always been fun for kids, but you can make a fun game of it and enjoy this activity with them. Collecting leaves is a fun way for them to learn a little bit about the trees in your yard and neighborhood. Start collecting in your yard then walk the neighborhood and try to find as many different types as you can.

Indoor Fall Activities For Kids

Many of the outdoor activities can be extended or broadened and turned into fall indoor activities for kids.

Use the leaves you've collected to create a leaf scrapbook. Kids can decorate the cover of either a photo album or an album they've created themselves.
